Warehouse jobs are now a common part of the British economy, with companies like Amazon, Asos, Boohoo, Tesco, Ikea and others building giant warehouses across the UK.

The number of warehouse workers has more than tripled since 2010, according to the ONS, with employees rising from 81,000 to 284,000 in 2023.

But some warehouse employees have raised concerns about “gruelling” conditions and poor working practices in some places. And an Observer investigation found some warehouse workers on zero hours contracts have been underpaid wages and deprived of holiday pay.
